great novel, wonderful, true life story

I was absolutely absorbed by this book. I looked forward to every time I picked it up to read. I must start by saying that I am Jewish and absolutely do NOT share the religious views of Corrie Ten Boom. But, this story is so engrossing and moving that my religious views were irrelevant. This is the remarkable story of a remarkable family that literally laid their lives out to save Jews in Holland during WWII. These are people I wish I could hug. Don't be put off by the religious views expressed. Those views caused heroic people to show mercy and empathy in the most brutal period in recent history. The views were not preachy. I only wish that I could do something good for any person that would give respect for the wonderful people in this story.

Nothing in the description informs the reader that this is an abridged version. Many key parts have been cut and section edited and changed so that they read dramatically differently. I ended having to re-buy the other version (the 35th anniversary one) so I could have the entire book.

I have read this book probably 6 times over the course of my life. You think I’d be tired of it by now. Not only do I love reading it and getting something new from it each time, I make sure I have a copy on hand to give out to others. Yes, it is that good. It is a true story of a tragic time in the history of mankind. It details the love, warmth and courage of a family of three; an elderly father and his two spinster daughters who risk everything to save their Jewish neighbors and strangers alike from the Nazi death camps. Read this book! You will not regret it!

I sit here at a loss for words because I know that nothing I can say will begin to display the emotions and thoughts swirling around in my mind. Ms. Boom's story touched a piece of me so deeply, I'm afraid that I will never be the same now. I wasn't alone, He was with me.'" -Corrie ten BoomI cannot began to express to each of you enough the need to read this book at least once in your life time. Please, I promise you, you will not be the same after. You will laugh with Corrie, cry with Corrie, cry out with Corrie in the pain she had to endure, but most importantly God will touch your heart with the miracles He provided her with through all of this. Just take a chance, go back into history a little ways with Ms. Boom, you won't be disappointed.

Whether you are Jew, Christian, Catholic or pagan, this book of history is enlightening for your journey. There are spiritual mentions that shouldn't keep you from reading this book. Just as you would sit respectfully in front of an aunt at a Holiday feast listening politely to a tale, so shall you listen to this one in all its entirety. Every story should be heard. Tin Boom's story holds your attention from concert to cover, bringing you along as if you feel sorrow and joy along side. Encourage others to read it like I was encouraged to read it. Pass history on so that love is spread no matter what religion you are.

It's taken me 6 decades to finally get around to reading Corrie ten Boom's remarkable story. I'm in awe at Corrie's honesty in her weakness, but more in the faith in both Corrie and her sister,Betsy, that sustained them through atrocities I can only imagine....A faith that even enabled them to find joy in fleas! Reading this story has certainly put my own difficulties into perspective and has inspired me to look so much more closely at my own faith. I am truly grateful that I have been so blessed, but I know now that I have to trust God more in every aspect of my life. Thank you, Corrie ten Boom, for sharing your story and for sharing the love of God with a very dark world.

Riveting true story of occupied Holland during WWII. Could not put down, though I knew the unspeakable would occur. A good reminder for today of how fascism starts: First the "state" controls the media and commerce, then bullying comes, with rationing, brutality, curfews, disappearances, genocide. But the hatred, oppression and unspeakable crimes against humanity did not stop the love and good works of this extremely talented, intelligent and faithful family. Their love, their story, and the Resistance, has survived. With many family photos that remind one of one's own relatives only a generation or so ago, and make the story unquestionably come to life. An excellent, excellent read for lovers or history, mystery, or human drama.

For several years, my wife kept trying to convince me to read The Hiding Place. But I thought it sounded like a little child's book. So I kept putting it off. Boy, was I wrong! What an awesome story. I'd give it more than two thumbs up, but I only have 2 thumbs! Well worth taking the time to read, ponder, and absorb how an unseen power guides our lives far more than we realize. i own all of Vance's sci fi novels, and probably a dozen GURPS game books. This one was a great read - as always with GURPS you have to wonder how often the gamebooks turn into actual games, but with this one I will say that if i ever get the opportunity to play it i will jump at the chance. The one caveat is that per Vance's request as a concession to the limeys the name "Wankh" became the "Wannek" in this game book, which is a little strange to a longtime reader of the original yankee version of the novels but easily ignored. Otherwise the game book is true to the novels, and provides a wonderful gazetteer of Tschai. The adventure ideas are good, and the game play is typical GURPS (which is to say, fairly easy to understand and seems easy to play - but the book is worth a buy/read even if you never play it). All in all a great read for any fan of the novels. EDIT: So years after I bought this, I have to say that it has really great artwork too. I can't read the novels without imagining the alien races looking exactly like they are depicted in this book, and I find myself pulling it out all the time when I start thinking about the Pnume, etc. If anyone ever plays it, please invite me! :-)

This book was so just what I needed! Something witty,funny and looking at life through the eyes of the legendary Peter Falk! He kept it simple,he was real and I love the fact that he paid honor to his first wife Alyce and to his 2nd wife! The photos in here are lovely,the only bad thing about this book is the fact that HE WASN'T MOE GREEN! I mean after reading this book I'm heart broken to know that,.we could've had our beloved COLUMBO IN THE GODFATHER! But truly this book is terrific,what else can you expect from one of the greatest actors in history!

Peter Falk tells how he was in some remote place, in Africa, I think, when he was approached by some local kids who smiled and waved. "Columbo!" they shouted.Falk talks about his raincoated character as well as other experiences in his life in small chapter, anecdotal form. He spends a couple of the chapters discussing how he came up with the Columbo character, what made Columbo tick, and even his use of the raincoat and where he got the beat-up old Peugot Columbo drove. Interviewed on the Actor's Studio by James Lipton, he's asked what he would like to hear God say when he arrived in heaven. Falk answered, "How much are those shoes?" a typical Columbo line he ad-libbed during an early episode.He also talks about other experiences in a chronological order, people he worked with, jobs he had, jokes, and more. He tells about the acting insight he got from orson Welles who was fed his line just before delivery through an earpiece. There was his arrest in Eastern Europe where he and his girlfriend were galivanting. He commented briefly on the skills of the late Patrick (Braveheart, TV's The Prisoner) McGoohan, who was a frequent Columbo guest villain as well as director of some episodes. I read it in a few hours. I loved him as Columbo and I believe I would have loved him had I the chance to meet him in person. A very funny,genuine and engaging book. Just one more thing, Thank you Peter Falk for years of priceless entertainment.

It is easy to picture Peter Falk sitting on the barstool ordering a favorite bowl of chili, talking about Columbo's cases and his interesting life and career. This book makes you feel like you're sitting next to him, listening and enjoying every word. A fun, lighthearted read with wonderful personal glimpses into a life filled with satisfying work, great friendships with equally talented movie and television people, and happiness in marriage.Such a rich life in every way. I highly recommend this book.

Hands down one of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of reading in a long time! It was like sitting in a comfy room with an old friend who’s telling you snippets of his beautiful life. I’ve always liked Peter Falk..I’m a huge Columbo fan..but after reading this book I just love the man! I highly recommend this book!

The book reads as though Peter Falk is talking to you; his writing style is conversational and the inclusion of some of his drawings is a real treat . I cherished each Columbo and a number of Peter Falk's movies. As I read, I reflected on his talent as an actor and thought how sad it is that so many of today's celebrities are far from his equal yet paid so much more.

If Falk's roles as Columbo and other characters pleased you, the same warm, self-deprecating personality comes through on the pages of this book. I only wish I had known about it earlier so I could have read it while this exceptionally talented actor was still alive.

With Ashes of Middenheim, the first in the Paths of the Damned epic campaign set in the Old World for Warhammer Fantasy Role Play, Black Industries has met its goal of creating a campaign worthy of the Enemy Within of 1st Edition fame. The first installment's adventures are short enough to be completed in one or two nights each and leave plenty of room for the GM to be creative and add their own content. In many cases, this is encouraged. Between some adventures there is enough space to put in one off adventures or to use published adventures such as the ones found in Plundered Vaults.Singing praises does little good in a review, so I'll concentrate on the few problems.First, not enough maps. Middenheim is wonderfully detailed and includes are great map of the city and sewers, but I would have liked to seen a local area map that includes the surrounding countryside. Also, many of the buildings, including some of the main buildings in the various adventures, are not mapped out. These are left to the GM to flesh out, or some such thing. I would still like to see maps for all of the places of any importance.Second, the campaign does not, at least to my mind, allow for elves. I don't see much reason that an elf would want to follow this campaign. Oh, sure, fighting chaos and such, yes. But it seems a lot of what happens are things an elf, whether an aloof High elf or a sylvan minded Wood Elf, would just say "oh well, human troubles" and be on their way. You have to work a bit harder to get elves involved is all I am saying. With humans you have the religious element of Ulric and Sigmar to make them feel obligated in some way, plus this is their country. Dwarfs, likewise, are somewhat sympathetic toward human endeavors and the Sigmarite cause, what with Sigmar being an ancient dwarfish ally. This is a minor point, but one which caused me some vexation as a GM.Did I mention the history, map and background for Middenheim was top notch? Oh, I guess I did. Well, it is worth the price for that alone.

This is the first installment of the Paths of the Damned trilogy campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying (WFRP) and based on what I've seen of the later two adventures easily the best. This book has two distinct parts, a summary of Middenheim (~28 pages) and the eight chapters of the adventure proper (~50+ pages).Summary of Middenheim. The recent travails of Middenheim are nicely summarized and the sections of the city are well laid out and accompanied by a small neighborhood map that ties nicely into the map of the entire city. Consistent with a big city, the sewers are also laid out and this always serves to increase the "realism" of the "grim and perilous world of adventure" that is WFRP. The city is recovering from a siege, and this is well handled by the book.The Ashes of Middenheim adventure. Picking up seemlessly from the introductory adventure in the WFRP book, this adventure consists of eight distinct chapters. While quite linear, I liked the adventure segments as they involved a nice mix of city, country, tomb raiding, investigation and combat. The NPCs, I though, were unusually interesting, and even as a referee reading it I was impressed with some of the plot twists and turns. The plot gets increasingly incredible and "suspension of disbelief" is strained but it seems worth it.In contrast to the other WFRP adventures I've seen, this one does include detailed experience point guides, very helpful to those of us new to the system.Printed in Canada.

I'll make it quick: if you're a GM looking to jump right into the revamped WFRP with your party this is the book for you!Novice or veteran GMs will appreciate the campaign and its details. Starting right off where the `starter' adventure in the WFRP main book left off this is volume one of an Epic three part campaign in the Empire.Taking place in the great city of Middenheim it includes eight `chapters' (adventures) which tell the tale of chaos corrupting the heart of a noble city from within...and your PCs are the only ones who can choose to fight it.Geared toward beginning characters in their first career (or at most their second) the book contains all the material needed for a great campaign. Along with maps, stats, background history and even an additional career this book is worth the price for the bits of info about Middenheim, the kingdom of Middenland and the religions of Sigmar and primarily Ulric.I completly recommend this book especially if you're like myself: and old-school WFRPer (GM) who has not gamed in their glories world of perilous adventure form many a year. It will jump start not only your gaming but your imagination.
