My Friend Michael: An Ordinary Friendship with an Extraordinary Man, by Frank Cascio

From the Back Cover

Everyone knows Michael Jackson—the myth. This is the revealing true story of Michael Jackson—the man.To Frank Cascio, Michael Jackson was many things—second father, big brother, boss, mentor, and teacher, but most of all he was a friend. Though Cascio was just a few years old when he first met Jackson in 1984, at the peak of the pop star’s career, Jackson was at the center of his life for the next twenty-five years, allowing Cascio to observe firsthand the greatest entertainer the world had ever seen. In that time, he became the ultimate Michael Jackson insider, yet remained publicly silent about his experiences. Until now. In My Friend Michael, Cascio refutes the rumors, lies, and accusations that have accumulated over the years, providing a candid look at the Michael Jackson he knew for more than two decades. Offering an uplifting and definitive account of the legend, Cascio details how he grew up alongside Jackson, traveling the world with him on concert tours and eventually working for him. Through this lens, Cascio captures Jackson’s most private and tumultuous moments, while also setting the record straight on the entertainer’s notorious and misunderstood lifestyle—from his Peter Pan reality and his sexuality to the false allegations against him. As Cascio shows, there was a great deal more to Michael Jackson than the headlines about him have suggested. Cascio reveals his friend in all his complexity, bringing to light his passions and joys as well as his flaws and eccentricities. Including stories about Jackson that have never before been made public, Cascio creates a balanced, human look at the pop star, one that shows Jackson as the very real person he was—a lively friend with an endearingly juvenile sense of humor. What emerges is a clear-eyed yet deeply respectful portrait of Jackson—a man who was at times unremarkably average but also terribly scarred by his life in the spotlight. Packed with never-before-seen photos, anecdotes, and insights, My Friend Michael is a trove of Michael Jackson lore that both celebrates his life and redefines our understanding of the man behind the myth.

This book is so hard to read. Its wonderful in ways that show us inside Michaels life but its hard to see him cry and hurt so much because of others. Its not fair for anyone to suffer such pain. I believe Michael was born 20 yrs to soon. Everything they had issues with him then is perfectly common now. For petes sake a man can become a woman and get an award for it. I'm 34 never listened to Michael much growing up coming from a country based family but a few months back on youtube the 93 deposition of the Girl is mine played on my auto and I listened to him. No matter how they tried to rope him he was kind and pleasant and respectful. he kept is composure at all cost. I listened to him for hours just talk, soothed by his voice and reminded of humanity but his personality. I believe my favorite thing to hear is him create the rhythm. When I run across clips of him beatboxing everything around me goes still. This book is the first I've read but wont be the last though I am limited to only read ones I believe to be real not someone writing to gain money from his life, seems a lot do that. While I am sure Frank made a nice dime off this book its classy and real. Im about 80% done with the book but I have to keep stopping because the sad parts mess my whole day up, my heart goes out tho a man who no longer feels any pain. I believe Michael was as innocent as they came and this world couldn't handle that. We live in an awful time where people bully those who they don't understand and it was at its worst with Michael. I am not a crazy fan but a devoted listener. I love most of his music some I cant understand but most I enjoy. I read to understand him more and enjoy the insight I am finding. This book explains so much. The 2002 MTV award was a bunch of BS, like seriously how did his manager tell him this was the award he would receive then Brittany just happened to call it out that way in his speech? SORRY. MTV is a bully, I don't watch it anymore I've outgrown it but I wouldn't watch now knowing this is the nasty games they play. Well back to the book. lets see what happens in the end!

I was cautiously optimistic about reading My Friend Michael by Frank Cascio. On one hand, I had to wonder why a loyal lifelong friend of Michael's would break his silence to write a book about a friendship that had successfully been kept secret for over 20 years. But the more I delved into it, the more apparent it became that Frank Cascio's intentions were rooted in his lifelong devotion to his friend. He wanted to share the truth that he experienced first hand, and like any friendship, there were ups and downs. My Friend Michael is very different than any other book about Michael Jackson I've read. To my knowledge, it's the first book written by someone close to the subject who isn't family, a business associate or a slick media hound. Frank Cascio is an ordinary guy who happened to have an extraordinary friendship with a man who was anything but ordinary. This book doesn't sugar coat its subject matter, nor does it place Michael on a pedestal beyond reproach. By contrast, it offers perhaps the most humanizing glimpse into the King of Pop's heart written to date; a man who craved genuine human interactions, yet lived in a world where no one could be trusted. Riddled with paranoia, Michael struggled to have friendships based on genuine, mutual love, as opposed to the shrewd opportunists that populated his life.Michael Jackson wasn't only the most talented entertainer of all time, he was perhaps one of the most complex. It can't be easy to live one's entire life in a fishbowl, with little connection to the daily reality the rest of us face. This book reminds us that Michael Jackson was a mere mortal, like the rest of us, but lived a life beyond the scope the rest of us can imagine. Circumstances like that can't help but skew an individual's perspective on the world at large and how they choose to live their life. Michael may have been a human being like the rest of us, but the similarities veer off sharply pretty soon thereafter. Frank paints a picture of a man yearning to cling to some normalcy while strapped to the rocket ship called fame. It's almost as if Michael's super nova dragged him beyond the stratosphere and all he could do was hang on for the ride along with the rest of us; try as he may to steer it in the right direction, ultimately no one had any control over the trajectory.Frank shares many intimate stories and misadventures he and Michael shared. Through it all, it's clear Michael was yearning to experience an ordinary friendship of inside jokes, childish pranks and genuine camaraderie. It would seem Michael handpicked the Cascios as his adopted family, with whom he could celebrate birthdays, Christmases and family vacations, in ways that he never experienced with his own family. Perhaps it's no mistake Michael chose a family from New Jersey; all American and away from the hustle of metropolitan life, yet not so far off the map to cause Michael much of a detour.Frank details how Michael mentored him as a friend and father figure, teaching him how to create Mind Maps, and to set his goals high without limiting himself. It's a tutelage that I envy. There's no school or lessons in the street to equal that of the University of Michael Jackson; and Frank seemed to graduate King of Pop cum-laude. It's clear Frank learned much from this unique mentor, and that it will serve him for the remainder of his life. And what cool parents Frank had, to allow their children to travel Europe with a man just accused of pedophilia, and essentially allowing Michael to co-parent all of their offspring for over 20 years. I should have been so lucky to have parents like that. The mere fact that the Cascio's trusted Michael to such a degree speaks volumes to his innocence. They weren't brainwashed by Michael; if anything, they were one of the few to see the truth so clearly at a time when the rest of the world had doubts. Frank knew the children and families who falsely accused Michael. He was there, and in many cases, in the bedrooms during the sleepovers. Bottom line, the only impropriety to occur, was accusing an innocent man to begin with.Frank also witnessed first hand Michael's prescription drug problem. To me, it makes total sense that an entertainer the magnitude of Michael Jackson would have a problem coming down after an energized performance, and would struggle to find the serenity to fall asleep. Particularly when coupled with chronic pain, and feeling the responsibility to wake up the next day and do it all over again. No, Propofol was not intended to be used as a nightly sleep aid, but then, the rest of us aren't working a job that pumps us full of adrenaline night after night, nor do we feel the daily responsibility to a stadium full of screaming fans. Yes, in one respect, Michael understandably lived life by a different set of rules, because his life resembled no other. The only thing I fault Michael for with Propofol use was trusting the wrong doctor, and not insisting on having proper medical equipment and staff present. But I imagine it's easy to become complacent when you're the King. Frank Cascio makes it clear that there's a big difference between a drug addict twitching for a fix, and a man suffering with chronic pain yearning for relief. I live with chronic pain, so I can relate to the helplessness and hopelessness that Michael must have felt in that regard. Compound that by having the entire world stare down at you as a pedophile, and it becomes clear the horrific reality that Michael faced on a daily basis. It's no wonder he couldn't sleep. Could you?One of the funniest stories in the book was reading how Frank and Michael snuck into Disney World Paris and explored the grounds after hours. Apparently they even signed one of the Peter Pan exhibits, and I can't help but wonder if there mark is still there to this day. The image of Michael Jackson, the world's biggest star, losing his footing, and falling into a faux lake, waist deep and pouring water out of his iconic fedora, is an image I won't soon forget. And I imagine Frank won't either. It's obvious that Frank gave Michael the one thing he wanted most, friendship. But it's a friendship that was tested on levels few other face. And by the end of the book, it's understandable why Frank's friendship with Michael couldn't help but be strained under the weight of Michael's massive existence. At the end of the day, perhaps there's no way to have an ordinary friendship with an extraordinary man. But Frank and Michael seemed to come as close as they could get.Bottom Line -- Michael Jackson was a human being, first and foremost. If you're prepared to read a book about Michael the person, a man with flaws, feelings and insecurities, then you'll enjoy this book. Frank Cascio made me feel closer to Michael in a way I never have before. So much so, that I felt the loss of friendship right alongside Frank by the end of the book. We all know there's no happy ending here, but continuing to celebrate Michael's life is where the "happily ever after" begins. I think Jermaine's book was more eloquently written, but Frank's fills the gaps that Jermaine's left behind. It's a fascinating read, and I highly recommend it to anyone who'd like to learn a new layer of truth to the humanity that was Michael Jackson.MJ Forever & Eternally!

This writing was so movingly honest. Frank told his story with objectivity in that he exposed Michael's faults with love. Recognizing and conveying with beauty that Michael lived a stratepheric life. This was a life the rest of the world could never comprehend within a mere mortal existence. Michael, as any fan knows, was not mortal in the sense that he had long ago developed strategies, utililizing them to maneuver and cope with a life lived on the moon. This life proved to be unmanagable even for the one and only Moonwalker. This book made me laugh with Frank's dry humor revealing he and Michael's child like antics. And, made me tear up with the confusing and hurtful moments they both endured. An onslaught of events inflicted by life on the moon. An incredibly moving and oddly realistic read.

Frank gives an insight on the REAL Michael. He first saw Michael through the eyes of a child, and that's why I think he's been so loyal to him through all these years. Michael took care of him when he was little, so Frank was a great friend to him later on. They had a wonderful relationship. In this book, it doesn't seem like Frank shares things about Michael he didn't want the world to know. He gave us just enough information where we could understand Michael, but it's obvious he didn't share some things for the sake of Michael's privacy. He kept Michael's girlfriend's identities hidden when mentioning them, he was very respectful. If you love Michael Jackson, this book is something worth reading.

I bought cause of all the good reviews. We get glimpse at Micheal's life thru frank's eyes. Unfortunaly its written in the view of a child's eye. I feel like a 11 year old is telling me this story.

One can look at this book as a collection of photographs of sleeping dogs or snapped at the moment the dogs shut their eyes, then this book may merit no more than two stars. But if one can envision how dogs can (at times) be so serene one will be inspired to reach the same serenity. These are not just pictures of cute and beautiful dogs, they are pictures of calm. Well, they are our best friends; and if they can, so can we.

Bought as a gift for my sister who loves dogs as much as I do! She loved it so much, she keeps in on her coffee table and told me she likes to take her time with it, and read a couple pages a day. It makes her feel good and gives her daily zen! So cute! Best gift!

Gave as a gift to my dog-loving sister and she loved it.

Bought this book as a "thank you" for my family when they took care of my dogs during the holidays. Adorable book and it lives on their table in the living room.

Lovely book of beautiful dogs captured at their most serene.

A must-have if you are a dog lover.

Great for use at school where my wife is an elementary school counselor!

I gave these as gifts and the recipients were delighted.

Amazon.com Review

Guest Review of Taipei, by Tao LinBy Charles Yu Charles Yu is the author of How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe, which was named one of the best books of the year by Time magazine. He received the National Book Foundation’s 5 Under 35 Award for his story collection Third Class Superhero, and was a finalist for the PEN Center USA Literary Award. His work has been published in The New York Times, Playboy, and Slate, among other periodicals. Yu lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Michelle, and their two children. What does it feel like to be alive? It's an inquiry central to many novels, either explicitly or implicitly, and it has been explored in so many ways, in so many variations and permutations, that it's remarkable when someone finds a new way of asking the question. With Taipei, Tao Lin has managed to do just that. The novel's protagonist, Paul, is a twenty-something writer living in New York City who has at least two extraordinary capabilities: (1) a terrifyingly high tolerance for pharmacological substances, and (2) a prodigious ability to record and recount the moment-to-moment flow of micro-impressions and fleeting sensations of his awareness. While Lin may not be the first writer to combine these two elements in the form of a novel, he is the first one to synthesize them in this particular way, and it is the tension and interaction of these things that make Taipei such a compelling read. What does it feel like to be alive? Weird. Really weird. That's something very easy to forget - we have an ability to acclimate quickly to our own ambient mental environment. For similar reasons, the fundamental strangeness of being alive is also very hard to articulate. What Tao Lin does is to slow everything down, paying very close attention to everything, registering his findings. The noise and bustle and all-night lights of the big city, first New York City, and then Taipei, the blur of pills and parties and people's faces are presented not as an impressionistic smear, but in careful, deliberate language, prose so precise it cannot be anything but excruciatingly honest. At times, Taipei feels like an experiment, a study on how to use (and abuse) your brain, with Paul communicating in a way that almost feels scientific - he's a scientist studying the strange thing called his self, or an alien who experiences human consciousness as if he were test-driving a brand new technology. It is this detachment which allows Lin to render, in a very pure, very visceral way, what the fringe feels like, a displacement or distance from the center, from your own heart, the psychological impossibility of going to some real or imagined home. Taipei renders all of this with a brute and direct force, and I admit at times that force caused me to flinch. This kind of experience is why I read, though - to be challenged, to be confronted, to experience something completely familiar that has been made entirely new.

From Booklist

This novel follows Paul, a young, Brooklyn-based author, as his drug addiction spirals out of control. Though he experiments at first in the name of artistic expression, Paul becomes consumed by apathy, tripping during interviews and drifting out of touch with old friends. He meets and marries Erin, a fellow artist drug user, and they move to Taipei, Taiwan, where they become performance artists, videotaping themselves while on drugs in public. As their relationship breaks down, Paul nearly overdoses and is finally thankful to be alive. The characters are visibly suffering from loneliness, desperately wounded self-esteem, and an aimlessness that leads them to wander from poetry reading to movie theater to party to party, making the briefest and shallowest of encounters with those around them. Tao Lin’s writing style is definitively unique and mirrors the shifting reality his drugged characters perceive when submerged in their daze. At times, however, it is a haze too thick for the unencumbered reader to peer through. --Sarah Grant

This could easily be 5 stars, I'll reread at some point.. it is I think very difficult to argue that it isn't at least innovative in it's style and approach to prose, I can also see why people felt it boring or self absorbed or whatever, it's certainly not "exciting" or "thrilling" in any conventional sense, the Brooklyn are Brooklyn references and it can occasionally feel like Tao is flattering himself recounting specifically audacious, incremental and ever increasing levels of drug use throughout, but it still feels painfully accurate and the originality of Tao's particular dead pan weaving and his ability to break down certain emotions, feelings (or lack of), and super ordinary situations is what really shines and makes this a dark, modern - if perhaps stilted, meandering tale still well worth excavating. Why not 5 stars?.. Well, the very particular brand of humor seems to wear itself thin at times, probably because it operates in such a dry and narrow vein with the limited dimensionality of the first person narration thru this character, which can be tiring, but that also is the intention and what conveys the character's consistently depressed and strung out narrative so well. So i guess I feel that however great I find the writing to be, the perspective of the narrator that we're forced to inhabit is just such that it can flatly feel like a labor at times, especially if you've moved on from the point in your life of having to deal with the weighted, monotonous, empty feeling one gets from certain drug use and or/ depression and aren't necessarily thrilled about wading back in, especially without the obvious benefits.Still Tao's originality of approach makes it all worthwhile and a even water mark of sorts in contemporary writing (ok maybe it's a 5..).

one of the best novels of the century, if you haven't heard.

Great condition thanks.

Paul, the "hero" of Tao Lin's novel, is a twentysomething writer who lives in Brooklyn. The "action" of the novel is Paul travelling to his book readings, visiting his parents in Taiwan, and hooking up with Erin, a woman he sort of loves and sort of doesn't.Paul also takes drugs, lots of drugs. Unlike the Beats, who took drugs to find ecstatic union with a friend or the universe, or the Hippies, who got high to get on the fast track to enlightenment, Paul has no grand rationalization for his massive ingestion of psychedelics, uppers and downers. All Paul and his friends seem to be reaching for is respite from some deep and nameless anxiety. Their drug use lacks the desperation of addiction, but it doesn't feel fun either. More like grim obligation, which is what reading about it finally feels like as well.Taipei provides a minutely detailed examination of a consciousness shaped more by the digital than the analog world. The novel has a flat, affectless, often convoluted prose style that poses interesting challenges to our assumptions about what constitutes art. We've put the tools of communication into Everyman's hands, but blogging, tweeting, posting, uploading, narrowcasting, etc is not the same as creating a polished artistic statement. Lin makes that point beautifully (maybe even intentionally) when Paul and Erin get high and go to a MacDonald's in Taipei, where they make a boring, inane, juvenile faux documentary with iMovie. There is a long, honorable history in the novel of writers diving deeply into a single consciousness to reveal truths about how we process the world around us. What makes this book such a slog at times is that Paul never engages the people and places around him in a meaningful way. If this novel was meant as a send up of Brooklyn hipsterdom, it should have been funnier. If it was meant to chronicle this iteration of lost twentysomethings, it should have more shading and social context. Instead we have a main character who is both self-absorbed and anhedonic, not a pretty combination. Paul's consciousness is like a dark star, collapsing endlessly inward, sucking in all the light around it.
