I've given away several dozen copies of this book as gifts to friends who visit New York (including their teenage children), English teachers both American and foreign, and to new, literary friends who find it a fascinating introduction to the city I've lived in for over 25 years. It offers a comprehensive array of top-drawer writers in a focused, thematic collection. And the Everyman edition is beautiful--small and elegant with a gold ribbon bookmark. If you like NYC, or have an interest in cities and the writers who have lived in them, check this out.

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who loves poetry and lives in NYC. She loved it. She loved the collection of poetry by the many well-known poets, of course, but she also raved about the book itself--the size, making it convenient to carry, the look of the cover and the feel of the material. I've never heard anyone talk so about the look, feel and construction of a book. This gift was a real hit.

This was a gift for my brother, and he enjoyed it very much! The poems start from long ago, up to the present time about NewYork.

I've never been a fan of poetry. In fact this is the first book of poetry I have ever purchased, purchased out of a sense of loving my city. I have been continually amazed by the evocative imagery found throughout this excellently chosen group of poems. They bring a full sense of what New York City is and was, and provide both a sense of being here and that experience has not varied much over time.What prevents a 5 star rating, and this is picky perhaps, is that the poet's names are printed after, rather than before the work, something which I found confusing when poems went on for several pages.

If you are looking for something to read as 9/11 solace, get this book. I can't say enough about how good it is. As a Dorothy Parker fan, I was looking for something about NYC by classic poets, and came across "Poems of New York" by accident. It is a perfect gift book to give others.

Needed to buy for a class and it’s become a great book to read in my down time . So many different poems that view the city In ways I’d never think to see.

The copy quality of this is poor with lots of stray marks and some of the pages are really hard to read because of it. I was interested in the work and purchased this copy because it had an interesting looking cover and was Prime eligible, but would recommend purchasing another version.

A very honest and scholarly assessment of the problems in the modern world. It is very much about a social science but is not difficult to read. However it does not have any easy answers, just an idea about the process that could be followed.

This was so complicated! I had to read it twice, but once I understood it, it has valuable things to say. It definitely helps one distinguish between the ideology and the utopia. I will say, he tends to be a bit repetitive toward the beginning-- it could be helpful at first, but after three paragraphs of the same information all I could think was "okay i get it...."

Kessenger's travesty of an edition, thankfully, no longer appears among the list of currently available Amazon offerings. I leave my review in place, however, in case the thing should attempt to come back to life. I have moved a few brief remarks (somewhat amplified) on the substance of Mannheim's ideas from the last paragraph to the following paragraph in celebration of the Kessenger edition's falling off the earth--or, at least out of Amazon.Today, the term 'Utopian' is achieving a new currency--this time as an element in the conservative characterization of left wing political ideas. Such reappearance of the concept of 'utopia' within the contemporary ideological contest makes it very timely to visit (or revisit) Mannheim's classic work of critique and analysis in which the originality of the author's contribution consists precisely in his juxtaposing the idea of 'utopian' to 'ideological' rather than, as is usual, to 'realistic' [or to 'realizable']. One of Mannheim's central points is that one's sense of what is and is not, realizable in the world has more to do with the nature of his own socially structured thinking than with the limits imposed upon mankind by what is timelessly and objectively possible. Mannheim does not doubt that such limits exist, but he suggests the word: 'utopian', when employed as an epithet, can reveal more about the speaker's position in life and political orientation than it does about the opponent's loss of a practable sense of reality. Another of Mannheim's points is that utopian thought, which he defines as thinking that transcends the bounds of the existing order, seemingly is, to humanity's loss, actually disappearing. This disappearance ushers in a world that no longer, even in part, orients itself toward possibilities of transcendence to a higher historical and sociological stage.Mannheim's sense of the loss of utopian aspirations harmonizes compatibly with Critical Theorist Herbert Marcuse's notion of the squelching of dialectical oppositions in the contemporary social universe as leading to mankind's existence being confined to a single dimension--cf that author's One Dimensional Man.[BELOW IS A RETURN TO THE REVIEW OF THE APPARENTLY NOW-DEFUNCT KESSINGER EDITION]The publishers of the Kessenger edition are arrant idiots. The book, in its authentic form, is a landmark collection of essays by Karl Mannheim which was first published in German under the title "Ideologie und Utopie." Kessinger Publishing, LLC has mis-titled this volume by inserting the word "An" in front of the translated words: "Ideology and Utopia." They have done this either because members of Kessinger's editorial staff do not know the real title or, more likely, because they figure that such insertion insures that their caricature will appear before any of the authentically titled versions on an Amazon search. For that reason alone this edition would deserve to be avoided--even if that left no alternative but to learn German and read the original. There are alternatives however. These range in price from dirt cheap for a used umpteenth printing to sky high for a collectible edition. Take your pick of those, I advise, but do not choose this Kessinger travesty.The work itself (in a respectable edition) stands as a highly readable and much discussed introduction to a specialized branch of sociology known as the sociology of knowledge. The two principal exponents of this specialized study are Mannheim and Max Scheler. A search on their names will produce an intriguing list of titles available on Amazon, but "Ideology and Utopia" is the right place to begin for anyone not already familiar with the literature. (Also, worth considering is the volume: "From Karl Mannheim" which contains selections from a broad range of Mannheim's writings together with editors' and translator's introductions that set forth the development and the interpretive tradition of Mannheim's body of work.) "Ideology and Utopia" includes a twenty page preface by Louis Wirth (one of its translators) which well serves the intention of acquainting an English speaking audience with the basics of Mannheim's approach.Today, the term 'Utopian' is achieving a new currency--this time as an element in the conservative characterization of left wing political ideas. History and sociology is on his mind as he makes his case that nothing we think is outside history or culture. We can know anything nor can we act in politics without a clear grasp of the historicity of the groups that shape what we know about life and ourselves.

As I previously said about his other books, Calder is the go to guy for info about anything boating related. This was my first book of his, I've just rec'd "How to Read a Nautical Chart", also equally detailed as this one. I'd say, and I was a maintenance electrician for over a decade & a General Contractor for about 30 yrs, this is one of the most detailed books on maintenance/troubleshooting I've ever read; and I've read quite a few! He starts out on the subject of batteries - and over 15 pages later he still had more to say. Photographs of various stages of failure of boat components show what to watch for as a boat owner. Excellent detail, down to Ohm's law and calculations for the flow of electrons as a measurement of amperes - stuff I took in College Physics classes many moons ago - to simple things that many just forget to do. His troubleshooting flowcharts are the kind of thinking process mechanically inclined folks can appreciate, which he does on every major component on powered or sail vessels. Amazing detail and extras like how to jerry-rigged a DC rectifier in a blown-out condition enough to get you back safely to shore. Again, as I've had sailors who live on their vessels advise me, "anything by Calder" should be in a boater's library ON THE BOAT! This is where we'll be keeping this one once I'm done reading at home. If you have room for only one mechanical book, other than your owners manual, this is the one I would choose!

I bought the Kindle version of this book as I'm trying to keep my paper bound books to a minimum. It's got a lot of good data in it. However there is one thing that I'm finding really annoying. There are a lot of tables in the book and you cannot magnify them. I don't know if the blame should be laid at Amazon's feet or the publisher for using images for tables instead of text. What I can say is that it's a very difficult to read some times and ruins the over all useability of the book. For this lack of foresight I'm dinging the book 2stars (for the Kindle version).

This book is the best of its kind and should come with every boat. I am a licensed master captain with decades of experience running and repairing boats. I also run an offshore fishing and diving charter boat (ORION - Out to Sea Adventures - Port Aransas, TX). Unfortunately, if it can break on a boat I have had to fix it. I also rebuilt several boats from the hull up. There are other good books out there and some may go into more detail on certain topics but if you do not own and read this book first you are doing yourself a disservice. I also am a consultant to many vessel owners and have sent this book to them as a reference. It has saved many of them thousands of dollars. Even if you are not doing the work yourself this book can really help you understand what you are talking about when you hire someone and inspect their work.

It remains a good, solid, practical manual of "what matters and why" for cruising boat systems. The basic understandings remain valid even when the tech and materials evolve. Read it, then update the knowledge with modern articles and "Practical Sailor" etc, and the combo is very useful. If this ever goes into a new edition, I would jump on that sight unseen. We have owned and enjoyed a homebuilt wooden 17' catboat for 8 years with very minimal systems to maintain (outboard 5HP, 12V for running lights/accessories, bilge pump, and 1 marine battery). We recently upgraded to a Catalina 320, and significantly more complexity with all its systems that we will now need to understand and maintain.When we conducted the marine survey, our surveyor recommended that we immediately get this Nigel Calder book, and proceed to read it cover to cover.So, we did! Well, we are not through reading it but have already found it to be an indispensible resource to understanding the systems on the boat, and what we will need to do to maintain it, and make repairs when needed.

After buying an less than brand new cruiser, I found that I was faced with many things going awry and I wasn't sure how to fix it or even what to look for. Since there are limits to the checkbook I figured that if I was going to own a boat I better know what it is I'm getting into. I have learned so many things about what I bought after reading this book that had I bought this book before I bought the boat, I would not be the owner of this particular boat. Before the Spring season gets here and boating is back, I will have a brand new running machine with the help of this book. There is hope!

I love the "Who Was" and "Who Is" collection for my nine year old son. They are so informative and my child reads them before bed every night. This book, however, I would not purchase UNLESS you feel comfortable having to explain to your child why on earth there is a section in this book explaining that our most beloved childhood author had an interest in naked lady books. What are you thinking with this book? Who is the audience? Adults????? Obviously this is a book for kids. Why is this detail included? Why is no thought given to preserving the innocence of our children? Now, I had to spend ten minutes explaining this to my son and it is something he will never get out of his head. What a disappointment and complete lack of judgement by everyone involved in creating this book.

I wish this series had been around when I was a kid! So far, I have purchased Jim Henson, Dr. Seuss, George Lucas, The Beatles and Walt Disney for my son. These books are a great way for me to introduce the people who have always inspired me, to my own children. I believe that reading about different creative talents throughout history is not only a great way for kids to learn but also a great way to inspire them. We always have great conversations when we discuss the people from these books because we teach each other new things.

Read this book with with my eight year old daughter. Learned some fascinating facts about Dr. Seuss and really enjoyed the book.

This book should come with a warning. It talks about alcohol consumption, prohibition, and Dr. Suess writing a book with naked ladies.

I bought this book for my 9 year old son and it's a great read! He enjoyed the information provided and the fact that it was an easy read.

This was assigned for a class and I mostly enjoyed it. I felt like it could be a little overdramatized for shock value and could have framed it better for audiences to try and understand from outside their own cultural perspective.

Unbiased, factual, written from a journalistic perspective. Shocking to say the least. Brazil is a vacation hotspot, and a lot of men travel to Brazil for sex. It's always good to know something about where you're going and what possible things you may see/encounter while you're there. Some of these transgendered men look 100% like women, and you can't tell the difference. Before you pack your bags and head off to Brazil with a suitcase full of condoms & viagra, it probably wouldn't hurt to survey the landscape and case the bank before you raid the vault. FYI: The level of dedication and commitment these individuals give to transforming themselves into objects of attraction for men is unreal. Yet, they DON'T consider themselves, call or see themselves as women. They straight up see themselves as gay men, who simply fashion and adorn themselves as objects of attraction for other men. Yet they do everything like women. Interesting. This book opened my eyes - and where I may have once judged transgendered people, I now withhold such judgments. If you're comfortable judging transgendered people, don't read this book.

I loved this book. It takes an in depth description and analysis of the lives of travesti in Salvador (Brazil) and uses it to illuminate many of our taken-for-granted assumptions about gender in Europe, North America, and Latin America. Is great material for thought and classroom discussion, and it truly takes seriously the task of presenting perspectives of the research subjects.

I read this ethnography for an anthropology class on sex and gender and it is definitely my favorite read from this class so far. Kulick does so a good job giving voices to this extremely marginalized group. The kindle version has constant typos that need to be fixed. Lots of "I"s were instead typed as 1s. This is the only flaw but besides that everything else about this book is great! Highly recommended!

This was a required book for my cultural anthropology course and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This was a topic I did not know too much about and it was very eye-opening to read about another country's cultural habits.

Travesti is not a book for those looking for a cheap trill. Nor is it a book for the faint hearted. It is a study about a fringe element and that is rarely pretty. Violence, sex, robbery, death, drugs and unhappy relationships fill this book from front to back. The only reason I took away a point was the feeling that the author did get a tad too close to the subjects he was studying. I think he was trying too hard. Yet his results, the information and view points he was able to record, was amazing and really forced me to look at life and gender in a whole new fashion.

still one of the best ethnographies of queer life ever. Clear writing, clear thinking, no dense verbiage to wade through.

I bought this for my friend and it looks amazing. The cover looks just like the picture and it has a nice texture. The paper is nice though the lines are a little bigger than normal lined paper. I'm glad I got this because I know she will love it! Definitely recommend!
