i bought this some years ago and wow this is great. i still have it and i read it all.

Most of the books on "Egypt" have been written from the perspective of the outsider looking upon the "object" of Egypt. Dr. Seleem appears to have an understanding of the culture and spirituality of the ancient "Egyptians" that speaks from the perspective of the subject - the native. This book I bought was in excellent condition and was delivered on time as promised.

Don't be put off by the title! The real title of `The Egyptian Book of the Dead', is actually `The Book of Coming Forth by the Light of Day', which describes how the soul travels through this world, the netherworld, and the spiritual realm and is therefore very relevant to the living person. This ancient text is said to be the only record of the two-fold mystery - the mystery of life and death and is meant to be read and re-enacted by the living to help them on this journey.In reality, therefore, the book of the dead is the Egyptian book of life - life now, life hereafter and life everlasting. Dr Seleem explains that a human being needs a map in order to travel both in this lifetime and beyond: `How can you travel in life after death without knowing the way? The roads, ways, gates, hours, laws and guardians of life after death are explained in detail in the Book of the Dead and even though a copy is buried with the deceased, it is better to learn this divine knowledge by heart and live it in this lifetime.'Dr Seleem has produced a magnificent book, beautifully illustrated with many stunning illustrations from a 19th century edition of the papyrus. As a background to his translation, he has incorporated an impressive and revelatory account of the Egyptian religion, philosophy and mythology which he studied for over 25 years, which for itself, is a sufficient reason to buy the book. He has worked with the original texts and incorporated the symbolic meaning which they contain, often missed by earlier authors. It will serve scholars, people fascinated by this most ancient of traditions and anyone seeking to understand the mystery of life and death and the journey of the soul.

his book is based not based in Kemet, but on Greek and Hebrew perspectives about the origin of things; for example, he claims the gods were from Atlantis. His idea of the gods is that they were in four couples that were the progenitor of four distinct races: white, black, Egyptian (which he clearly sees as some sort of Arab-like people), and oriental (though there is no such race as Oriental, the term being a reference to objects from the East, not people). This is all very Hebrew where the sons of Noah give birth to distinct races in an archaic way of explaining difference and justifying the concept of a chosen people.The truth that this fake doctor denies is that there is only one human race that varies in phenotype due to environmental factors and nature's love of variation in features (which often varies within so-called races. What we call races are not distinct from each other by any natural boundary, but by arbitrary notions that are more concerned with classism and socialization, not science or nature. To suggest that four god couples established these four "distinct" races suggests a naturalness to contemporay racial classification that has been proven to be manmade, fluid, and inconsistent. If he had read the Ancient Egyptian texts then he would see that they acknowledged variation in the appearances of humans but affirmed that we are all children of God, not separate children of gods.

I commend the author for his breath of understanding of present scientific theories in cosmology. But more than that I marvelled at his grasp of Jewish sources that explicate the six days of creation at a deeper and profounder level while remaining true to traditional Jewish orthodoxy. This book is a classic must read for anyone passionately interested in resolving the science and religion debate, without comprising the integrity of either. Indeed, I would go as far as to say the author has provided genuine insights into the subject matter (chidushim in Hebrew) and in Jewish scholastic works there is no greater compliment.

Commenting on Six Days of Cosmology and EvolutionThis book reminds me of another book, the Annotated Alice. It's not that the subject matter is the same. It is more about the completeness in the handling of the subject.In the Annotated Alice we are treated to the story of Alice in Wonderland. Why, you may ask, for the alternative title? Because the author explains everything in the world related to what is written in the book. Half the text is comments. You learn everything from physics to literature in the comments.In Six Days of Cosmology and Evolution, the book presents merely twenty-percent comments. When Langer writes something, he is not lead by his imagination. No, he backs up everything he writes with annotated references. He tells you why, and he tells you who else said so. It is a very complete approach. Thus, this is one book I can recommend fully. Dr. Langer is thorough in his approach, leaving you satisfied with his conclusions.

In “The Lonely Man of Faith,” Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik writes that he has never been seriously troubled by the problem of the Biblical doctrine of creation vis-à -vis the scientific story of evolution at both the cosmic and the organic levels. While it was not a problem for him, it can nonetheless be quite disconcerting for some people. For many others, the supposed scientific conflicts between the Chumash and modern science has them leaving the world of faith for the world of science.But is there really such a conflict, or is it much ado about nothing? The reality is that it is indeed a most important topic that deserves attention. But the last time someone wrote that the creation story was a tad longer than 144 hours, all hell broke loose.In “Six Days of Cosmology and Evolution: A Scientific Commentary on the Genesis Text with Rabbinic Sources”, Daniel Langer has written a most engaging and absorbing work. Langer is a retired New York City public school teacher, and in his book he makes the science and theology most readable.As has been stated countless times, the Chumash is not a science book. Be it the creation story, the laws of kashrut and more, the function of the Biblical text is religious, not scientific. In the book, Langer refocuses the text and uses a scientific lens to understand how six days can be 15 billion years. Using this refraction, not only is there no contradiction, there is greater understanding and appreciation for the text itself.Langer takes the same approach as authors such Gerald Schroeder, Rabbi Eli Munk, Natan Slifkin, Nathan Aviezer and many others to show that the Torah’s account of creation is absolutely not in conflict with the sciences of cosmology, geology or evolution. But to understand how there’s no conflict requires an understanding of the nature of time, the overlapping character of the six days of creation, and the use of homonyms in the Chumash. The use of homonyms creates a multiplicity of meaning in the creation and other Biblical stories.In the book, Langer proceeds verse by verse through the first chapter in Genesis, and provides compelling reasons to assuage any problems. In each verse, he goes into detail to explain how the Biblical text is in harmony with the scientific approach.Langer’s approach is somewhat similar to an observation made by Jeremy England (who ironically Langer never references), a physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. England notes that much of the conflict between science and theology is that of language. For example, England notes that biology and physics are different languages for talking about the world. There is no such thing as physics without measurement of physical quantities. But biology is inherently, at its inception, nonquantitative. But no one would ever say there is a conflict between biology and physics.The chapter on the age of the universe is particularly interesting. So is the world 5,779 or 15 billions years old? Langer writes that both measurements are imprecise, as they are based on a premise of universal time, a single ubiquitous clock.The book is a fascinating and enjoyable read. Langer is able to show that the so-called conflict between the Torah’s version of creation and the scientific account of creation are in truth the same story, albeit framed from different lenses.In “God and the Astronomers,” astronomer and planetary physicist Robert Jastrow concludes that “for the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance, he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.”Jastrow also said that “the curtain drawn over the mystery of creation will never be raised by human efforts, at least in the foreseeable future.” In “Six Days of Cosmology and Evolution,” Langer would surprise Jastrow, by raising that curtain quite a bit.

I'm fascinated by foodways. The first Thanksgiving dinner I prepared was for my nieces and nephews while their parents were away. I was 22 and had never cooked a turkey, much less an entire dinner. I worked in a DC restaurant and asked the cooks what I should make for sides. That's when I first heard about macaroni and cheese being a "must-have" dish for Thanksgiving. It never appeared on any of my family's feast tables. Mac and cheese was always an end-of-the-month budget stretching dish at our house. Greens too. My Southern mother would make a pot of greens and a pot of white beans with skillet cornbread as a budget-stretcher meal, never a celebration meal. If my dad was eating with us, he would get a pickled pig's foot to eat along with the greens and beans. Over the years after talking with friends and comparing our family's food traditions, I learned there are similarities and differences in white and black southern foodways.In "Soul Food" culinary historian Adrian Miller explores the origins the foods that make up the quintessential soul food plate: greens, mac and cheese, fried chicken, beans, yams, corn bread and few more. It's a fascinating history of the Soul gastronomy. Back to mac and cheese -- originally a European dish made with costly and exotic ingredients introduced to Americans by Thomas Jefferson which became a luxury food of the wealthy white plantation table, prepared by enslaved people. As time went on, the ingredients for the dish became readily available commodities that were often included in the "poor boxes" distributed during the holiday season.This year, I'm going to make some mac and cheese, using one of the recipes in "Soul Food" for my multicultural family's Thanksgiving feast, in honor of all the history that Adrian Miller chronicles, in honor of a shared culinary heritage, and in honor of the enduring struggle for social justice that has been played out in our changing foodways.

This book takes us down a tour of American history via a previously un-trammeled path and as a result provides fascinating insights far beyond its primary focus on American soul food. By thoroughly exploring the history and derivations of the cuisine that has come to be known today as soul food, the author takes us into the life and culture of American black slavery, the interactions between whites and blacks over that history, and some little-discussed aspects of what it means to be black in today's America. Yes, you'll get a great deal of information about the food, along with example recipes of each major type. But far more than that, you'll come away with a greatly increased understanding of American history and culture. Along the way, you'll learn some fascinating tidbits, such as why the color of your cornmeal matters (and why it is different in different parts of the country) and why red-colored drinks are a cliché in the African-American community. Highly recommended!

Miller's history of soul foods and their origins is well researched and enlightening. His writing style is easy with enough humor and keen observation to delight even the most discerning reader. The inclusion of recipes adds to the book's appeal. I read this in one sitting and wanted more. Bravo Mr. Miller for a job well done!

Defining "soul food" is a task that others have attempted; yet a precise definition remains elusive. Author and "soul foodie" Adrian Miller meticulously and lovingly researches the complex history and traditions of this uniquely American cuisine. Miller compares and contrasts soul food with southern and down home cooking. He does this through planning a hypothetical, traditional soul food meal and then dedicating an entire chapter to each of its components. With this method, Miller weaves African American culinary history from West Africa, the Atlantic slave trade, the antebellum era, post Civil War poverty across the South, Jim Crow, the Great Migration, the Civil Rights era, to modern attempts to revive soul food. Other ethnic foods have found a niche in the American fast food and medium food markets (think Olive Garden, Applebees as "medium"). Yet soul food remains largely regulated to homes, church dinners, and small, local restaurants. Miller's last chapter is appropriately titled, "Whither Soul Food?" as he explores the future of soul food.Yes, there are recipes at the conclusion of each chapter! This is an excellent history book with flavor. I recommend this for book clubs for adults and teens, as the meetings could include sharing of recipes from the book.

Entertaining and educational...a cookbook and so much more! In the Black community "soul food" engenders many emotions, good, bad, and many degrees in between. This book gives us an historical look at soul food in the United States, its origins, what/where it is today, and where its heading.

I collect cookbooks and have a "passion" for cookbook that also deliver a message or have a story. This book does both, and does them well. I was impressed by the cover first of all because it catches the eye. I love to display my cookbooks on a bakers rack in my kitchen, so the dual purpose is perfect for me.This book is well written; you will not regret purchasing.

Adrian Miller has written the book I always wanted to write. Built on a foundation of excellent research, he adeptly peeks into the nooks and crannies of kitchens throughout history and all over the world. In so doing, he had honored my favorite cuisine with candor, punctuated by his beguiling sense of humor. From "Sunday cluck" to "motherless greens," to "liquid soul," he covers all the bases (or should I say pots, pans and dishes). The book was a pleasure to read and I look forward to referring to it often and cooking his recipes time and again in future.

A well researched read complete with recipes. Anyone interested in the history of soul food needs to buy this book.It's evident the author loves his subject. My only disappointment was that the book wasn't longer!
