Review
“Utterly fascinating and beautifully written. . . . [Wilson] addresses deep questions about humanity: how we can avoid physical or mental illnesses, raise children, make groups more effective, create sustainable economies and nurture better planetary stewards. . . . This View of Life should . . . be on everyone’s bedside table—company heads and policymakers included. I’ll be leaving a copy in the rented cottage outside Bristol where I am staying, confident that it will change future guests’ own view of life.” —Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, Nature“Splendid . . . An excellent argument that evolution applies to culture as well as organisms . . . [Wilson is] a masterful educator.” —Kirkus (starred review)“David Sloan Wilson has long been one of the most visionary and trail-blazing evolutionary biologists around, forcing the field to recognize that evolutionary change occurs from far more than selection solely at the level of the gene. In This View of Life, he explores the various surprising things that ‘evolution’ is and isn’t, and its relevance to everything from everyday life to global policy decisions. It’s thick with ideas and insights, written in a graceful, accessible style.” —Robert Sapolsky, New York Times bestselling author of Behave and Professor of Biology and Neurology at Stanford University“Social policy as a branch of biology? Even if this at first strikes you as preposterous, keep on reading. There are so many new ideas and perspectives in this delightful and thought-provoking book that it would be your loss if you did not engage with it. Not everybody will agree with the main thesis in this book, but I expect that everybody's way of thinking will be challenged and ultimately enriched by it.” —Daron Acemoglu, New York Times Bestselling co-author of Why Nations Fail and the Killian Professor of Economics at MIT “David Sloan Wilson is a clear-headed, sound-thinking, realistic idealist, and a great writer to boot. In this brilliant work he shows us how an evolutionary worldview can not only help us understand who we are—as a species, as individuals, and as a society—but can also help us develop better policies for our long-term good as social beings.” —Peter Gray, Research Professor at Boston College and author of Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life.“I thought I understood evolutionary theory, but I never expected to see so much of human psychology, society, and economics through its lens. Rarely has a book so effectively changed the way I view the world.” —Tim O’Reilly, founder of O’Reilly Media and author of WTF: What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us“With This View of Life, master biologist David Sloan Wilson advances the case for evolutionary theory as essential in understanding the human condition. Using accessible and powerful prose, Wilson first spells out what evolution is—and then he goes on to vividly demonstrate how evolution can help us make better policies and live richer lives. This book should be read by anyone who is interested in what it means to be human and how to make the world a better place.” —Glenn Geher, co-author of Mating Intelligence Unleashed and Founding Director of Evolutionary Studies, State University of New York at New Paltz

This View of Life has a central idea that is both important and valid. However, the author’s choice of writing for a popular audience made much of the science oversimplified and somewhat misleading. A good book, but parts will be grating to scientists and the scientifically literate alike.Essentially, Wilson argues that evolutionary thinking has been unfairly marred by the Social Darwinist label and needs to be made a basis for public policy. He begins by correctly separating Darwinian evolution from eugenic or anti-welfare policies. Here, he paints an overly rosy picture of Darwin (whose racist sayings shocked this reader when I read his original texts) and Galton (whose eugenic ideas were truly terrifying despite his genuine contributions to statistics). It’s not that Wilson lies but this reader got the feeling that he was more cheerleading for Darwin than painting a full picture of early twentieth century misrepresentations of his theory.Similarly, the major contribution from the evolutionary worldview that Wilson emphasizes is that human beings are not rational seekers of self-interest but naturally social animals who flourish most within small communities of support. This is a genuine insight and it should inform public policy but the treatment given to classical economic theory and those who do not believe in group level selection is little more than that of straw-man arguments. If you want to read a book about Wilson’s obviously important contributions to public policy that is written for everyone this is a good choice. If you are a scientist, or at least scientifically literate, prepare for some irritation. In short, maybe my expectations for this book were just wrong. If I had known that it would be a very simple introduction to the contemporary power of evolutionary thinking I would have loved it. Believing it was going to be a serious scientific work left me with unmet anticipations.Hopefully, this review can help potential readers enjoy the book for what it is: a well-written account of how the evolutionary worldview can positively influence contemporary public policy.
I received an advanced copy of this book (in absolutely no way tied to this review) and I loved it so much that I bought several to give to family, friends, and colleagues! I can't wait to find more ways to apply this to the world. What amazing feats we can accomplish when we have the right information. If you are interested in learning how we can work together and do our small parts to improve our circumstances, both for ourselves individually and for our communities, this book is a great place to start! If you are interested in understanding more about human behavior, this is for you. If you have any doubts about whether this book applies to you, let me tell you that it does! I couldn't help but think of all aspects of my life, all of the occupations in the world, and all of the regulatory groups that could be improved with the application of the principles conveyed in this book. Do yourself a favor and learn from those who have devoted their lives to understanding and disseminating how we can do more for ourselves by understanding how we've developed.
This book is a game changer. I have read much of David Sloan Wilson's work over the years. He has proven himself to be a great scientific thinker and communicator for decades. But this book is his best and I think that history will put this book as his most important contribution to our understanding of the world and our place in it.This book walks the reader through the basic ideas of natural selection, the history of Darwinism in modern thought, and the importance of multi-level selection as it relates to the human condition. Seamlessly, powerfully, and succinctly. From there, he takes a bold step: He makes the case that this understanding of evolutionary processes can, in a broad variety of ways, help make our world a better place.I put this book up there with Dawkins' The Selfish Gene and Pinker's The Blank Slate in terms of its impact on how we can understand what it means to be part of the living world. I currently have a graduate class full of bright students who are reading this book. Based on my communications with them, I know that they are learning a ton and are truly benefiting from this experience. This is one of those books that makes you smarter than you were before you read it.A+, two thumbs up, and a standing ovation. Thank you, David.
