Bakan starts this intriguing book with a quote from Freud "Everything new must have its roots in what was before." So what were the roots for Freud's revolutionary ideas?Bakan presents an excellent argument that either consciously or unconsciously, Freud drew on the mystical Jewish tradition in formulating psychoanalysis. His preface to the New Edition adds additional information that was not available to him when he wrote the original in 1958, and is well worth reading.Aside from its insights into psychoanalysis, this book provides a valuable history of Jewish mysticism, including some surprising detours. It also educated me on turn-of-the-century Vienna's virulent anti-Semitic environment -- something of which I had not been fully aware.As with Richard Noll's "Aryan Christ: The Secret Life of Carl Jung" (also reviewed by me), it provides some unusual viewpoints on the psychoanalytic revolution and is well worth reading.

Well... I'm using this CD set for my UC class, "World Musics". Honestly, entering into this class as a C-pop/J-pop/K-pop fan and a huge dislike for any and all classical style music, I was sure this class would be boring. But as it turns out, the music choices so far (I've only seen CD tracks 1 and 2, not 3 and 4 yet) aren't so bland and boring. I've found quite a few songs in the playlist that I can say aren't making me fall asleep. Dont get me wrong though, its not like I've found my new favorite song, that will always be C,J or K-pop.All in all, not too boring. Keeps you interested and is perfect for the course.
Sorry I couldn't resist with the title. I hightly recommend this book, I found it fascinating, but then the history and ideas are new to me. Maybe someone who is more familiar with Freud, Kabbalah or related subjects would be less impressed. See below review. The writing is clear and to the point, not weighted down with too much verbage, and unnecessary academic-speak.

Book arrived in extremely poor condition and was not described as such in the listing.
This was a required book for a class that I took. I liked that all the terms weren't overwhelming as some texts can be. My teacher knows the author and seemed to have respect for him (obviously or she wouldn't have used the book!!) He described things well because he had actually studied all the music that he wrote about.Great book even if you want a quick guide to world music.
This is supposed to be a 4 disk set. I received my rental in the mail and the package is held together with scotch tape. Not that huge of a deal. But it is missing disk #4. I paid $44 to rent the set for one quarter and its missing a disk. Really.
