Tech Educators - this is for you! As a college professor teaching non-technical students in a freshman core class, I've been looking for a platform to empower students (from our techies to our technophobes) as creators without getting bogged down by heavy overhead such as wiring, soldering, resistors, Arduino programming, or Raspberry Pi. The Circuit Playground Express (CPX) is a low cost ($25) computing platform loaded with lights, sensors (sound, light, motion, temperature), and more. This book is the perfect introduction for anyone interested in learning the CPX platform. The book covers the easy-to-advanced three major CPX programming platforms: the Make Code - Scratch-like drag-and-drop block programming that's available in a browser (hence cross-platform & also with side-by-side JavaScript creation), CircuitPython (the CPX integrates w/the free, cross-platform Mu coding environment that can graph directly from CPX sensors in real-time, and offers REPL code execution), and also the Arduino (C++-like) platform, which is more complex, but has a HUGE amount of coding examples. While the book isn't meant to be a comprehensive reference, it walks the reader through all three of these major programming platforms, with lots of fun projects. You'll learn enough to branch out on your own and leverage the vast amount of resources on the Internet. The author, Mike B, regularly creates content on the Adafruit website, as well. This book + the Circuit Playground Express is highly recommended for those seeking a first-step into making/hardware hacking/open-source hardware, and the platform is a wonderful learn-to-program tool. But know that the CPX is robust enough that you won't long for other tools anytime soon. The CPX can be integrated into other hardware w/out soldering, such as a Robotics platform, strings of programmable color "Neopixel" LED lights (which I gave students in easy-to-connect alligator-clip versions), wearables, and more. The book, when coupled with CPX hardware, is your on-ramp to STEM superpowers. Its timing was perfect for me, allowing me to prep transformative class exercises and learning examples as I tried out the CPX for the first time w/my students. It's been a huge hit. Plus, Adafruit's founder is a role-model for all, and a much-needed inspiration inspiring female STEM students.

This is a very good book that brings all of the information needed to work with Adafruit's Circuit Playground Express. I was most interested in Circuit Python programming and the book gives a good start. It is amazing the capability that Adafruit packs into a small single board development environment. This text helps sort it out well.

Great learning book to go with the Circuit Playground Express! Easy to follow with lots of great projects and examples to really get you going.

The author does a nice job of explaining the operation of the CPE and the appendixes share good information if you get stuck where CPE is not operational or lost it's way when trying to get CircuitPython working on it.

If you use AdaFruit products, this is a wonderful way to get started using Python

A basic getting started book. Written in an easy to read conversation style. Doesn't get bogged down with technical jargon when it's not needed.The audiomake code examples don't currently work, not a fault of the book but a bug from a constantly evolving platform.

I wanted to teach makecode to 6th graders. The section on makecode is nothing but an introduction. There was very little on individual blocks and the built in help is woefully lacking in details relating to CPX hardware.

Among the Children of the Sun was a book I happily returned to again and again after the usual daily interruptions. I learned about Bahamian wildlife, pirates, natives, politicians, priests, the history of various islands in the chain, and more. Hunt has a gift for lively sentences that put you right in the seat next to him on a rough inbound flight: "Water drops scudded across my window and we were flying over what seemed to be a washboard, bumping and grinding down through the clouds." We meet interesting characters too, learn about John Hawes, an architect and builder of beautiful churches, finally a pilgrim and seeker who became a hermit Franciscan before he died. Some characters often--though not exclusively--met in beachside bars provide comic relief. On the tragic side, I found nothing more compelling than story of Sam Pedican's death on the treacherous Glass Window Bridge--a real grabber, raw material for a mystery novel or film. Another treat is Hunt's enticing description of the Bahamian waters. A scuba diver myself, I marveled at his vivid, tangible renderings of the underwater world, reef and coral teeming with colorful fish. This is a fine book, a helpful read for anyone planning a trip to the Bahamas, or needing a nostalgic look in the rearview.

Marvin Hunt knows the Bahamas from decades of travel there and knows how to tell enchanting, intriguing stories as he wanders down another street through another village, island or beach to meet yet another stranger that he will weave into his narrative. The author's wanderlust pays off for the reader time and again whether he is entering the spirit world of West African Obeah on Cat Island or diving into the coral canyons off Harbour Island. But there's much more here too as the changing political and social realities of the Bahamas, from centuries-old causes to contemporary stresses and fault-lines, deepen the view of this beautiful, tragic place. Hunt again and again gives in to his craving to "drive until the road runs out" but his stories never give out nor will the memories one takes away from reading this richly entertaining book.

Very much enjoyed reading this book. As a long time visitor and now winter resident of an out island, I at first thought it might be one of those " I have been here a few weeks and can tell you what's what" books. But, in fact, the author seems to have developed a real sense of the island life for the locals and visitors, with compassion and intelligent analysis. I especially liked his appreciate of the intensity of the life and death cycles here, through closeness to raw nature and the limits of island life in a medical crisis. He integrated research into the geology and political-social-cultural contexts with a light touch that is easy and enjoyable to read. A great book to enjoy while visiting The Bahamas, or while dreaming of coming here,

I have never been to the Bahamas but love to read real travel stories. I felt like reading something sunny, warm, and beachy and decided to give this book a try. I ordered the paperback version and really enjoyed reading it. This book has given me a great view of the islands and makes me want to visit them some day! (I want to find those private "pools" of water and go snorkeling!) I like that there is a mix of adventure and history--so you truly learn a lot about the country and its culture while following the discoveries of the author. The narration is very entertaining and draws you in. Lots of funny anecdotes! Highly recommend to anyone who loves a good travel story or plans on learning more about the Bahamas.

There's nothing I love more than travel writing, and this book is among the best travel books I've read. Mr. Hunt tells deeply personal accounts of his travels throughout the Bahamas, connecting with the people and the land. After reading this book, I'm dying to go explore the Bahamas for myself.

Beautifully written!I loved this book. I was shopping for a cruising/sailing the Bahamas book (this one not one of those) and stumbled across this gem. Engaging, informative, very well written.I didn't want it to end.

This was such an interesting read about the family Islands of The Bahamas, which my family just returned from visiting. I began reading the book in route to Eleuthera and finished it as we departed. The book was informative and helpful in directing our travel.

Very personal. Objective. Great history. Delves into culture. Portions on Pirates and other on Eleuthera best. Family islands are worth this review.

Lisa M. Najavits, PhD, is currently Adjunct Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and previously was on faculty at Harvard Medical School for 25 years and Boston University School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System for 12 years. She is author of over 180 publications, including the books Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (for mental health professionals) and Finding Your Best Self, Revised Edition: Recovery from Addiction, Trauma, or Both (for general readers). She is Director of Treatment Innovations, which conducts research and training related to mental health and addiction. Dr. Najavits serves on the boards of numerous journals, including the Journal of Traumatic Stress, Journal of Gambling Studies, Journal of Dual Diagnosis, and Psychological Trauma, and has received awards including the Betty Ford Award from the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, the Emerging Leadership Award from the Committee on Women in Psychology of the American Psychological Association, the Early Career Contribution Award from the Society for Psychotherapy Research, and the Young Professional Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. We love this book. A teacher who was retiring gave me her copies of many of her favorite books for my daughter, and this book was among them. When my daughter chose it to read one day, we instantly fell in love with it. It rhymes, which is a feature we really love. It also has a lot of lesser known animals (bandicoot). My daughter isn't old enough to understand all of it yet, but the reference to some classic books (Dr. Seuss) is also a feature I really like. My daughter especially likes the part that goes, "The bears' love of books is completely outrageous. They licked all the pictures right off of the pages." It does work well for teaching caring for books. We bought this copy of the book for a friend's birthday party. My daughter is 3 now and really started enjoying listening to this book when she was about 2 and a half.

I found this at my local library and I ended up buying myself a copy! This is such a fun book! I love the rhyming text, and the illustrations are colorful and fun. It’s all about a zoo full of animals discovering a love of reading, so the message is great too. I plan on using it in my classroom over and over!

Very cute book about the animals at the zoo falling in love with books. I would have made the part where the animals did wrong behaviors more clear that it was wrong behavior, but maybe the teachers can cover that point after reading the books. Definitely a book every librarian and teacher should read to their students.

We love reading this to our 2 year old and think it will be an even better fit when she is 3-4 years old. We talk about how the animals learn to treat books so its a great lesson/example in how to take care of the books and not to mistreat them! That is why I think this book is a gem. It also exposes our chilren to new words and more unusual animals that you don't always see in the typical book.This book should definitely be added to your collection and is a nice out of the ordinary book with hidden humor and adult entertainment factor (we might as well enjoy it too, we have to read them!).

This is a wonderful modern take on the Dr Seuss type rhyming book. It is so beautifully illustrated and the story is fun and involving. My 5 year daughter loved it so much we donated a copy to her school as her classroom “birthday gift.”

Awesome! The rhyme and rhythms make it song-like, and the content compels you to listen/read for what comes next. Also, the illustrations are so full of movemt and meaning, some of which you have to look for. This book fosters a love of reading so effectively that when you are at the end, you want more! Perfect for children of any age!!

Love this book (third, I think, I've bought for grandchildren). Amusing, imaginative story and charming illustrations. A fun read.

Dr. Paul S. Auerbach, FACEP, FAWM, is the Redlich Family Professor of Surgery in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the world's leading expert on wilderness medicine and a prolific author. He is the Editor of Wilderness Medicine, and author of Medicine for the Outdoors and Field Guide to Wilderness Medicine. I reading this the second time as there is so much good information to try and absorb. I find that it provides a good balance between things that you can attempt on your own and when you should head to the emergency room right away.I believe this book is very well suited to have in your library as a reference. If you find yourself needing it right away as in an emergency, the text is not suited for quick on the spot prognosis of most ailments. You need to have read this book in advance and really understood the things that he is describing.

Dr. Auerbach's book is simply an amazing accomplishment, in a very small space he has managed to pack so much! This is THE book if you had to have one (which of course you shouldn't!) to take with you on a march into the wilds fleeing an apocalyptic collapse of the world as we know it. It assumes knowledge, but you don't need to be an EMT or medical student to use it.The information on each topic (everything from wildfires, to hypothermia, to terrorism or snake bite, it's all here) comes with great step-by-step guides on how to deal with it. A must have for any library and backpack!

This is the third edition of this book I have owned. Each edition is better, more thorough and complete. I approach this book with 40 years of outdoor experience, numerous first aid classes during that time, and having certified as a WFR about 3 months ago. If I could only pick one reference to take with me on a remote expedition, into a disaster zone, or on a foreign trip, this would be the book. (I have the hard copy and keep an electronic copy on my phone and tablet.) It covers the gamut from basic first aid, through more advanced treatment I am trained on, to more advanced treatments (some of which I would try in a real pinch and some I would not attempt). I think it is great reference up through the WFR or EMT level for wilderness medicine, although even more advanced providers may find it useful if they have little or no background or training in wilderness and austere environment. The only persistent knock I have on the book is that its organization is not quite as good as it could be, although I do believe it has improved somewhat with the latest revision and there are copious cross references to help you locate the correct information if you end up in an incorrect but related place.

This concise manual is a must for outdoor enthusiasts. Gives more information than a basics first aid class/manual without having to go through some lengthy EMT class

The book is well written and it covers everything that a layman would need to know. I keep it in a well stocked first aid kit.

Recommended for Emergency Responders and everyone else. Think of it as the Chilton's Manual for Homo sapiens.

This is an excellent resource for wilderness first aid (or anytime EMS will take a long time to arrive). It even includes information on medications and some relatively advanced procedures that can be done in the field.

Liked the format, photos ,very readable ,lots of info~ retired ER nurse teaching 1st aid to young grandsons.
