From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up–When Frankl was a child in Vienna, his dream was to be a doctor. While pursuing that goal, he became intrigued with Sigmund Freud and eventually moved into psychiatry, developing his own theory of logotherapy, a way to encourage patients to live fully by looking to the future rather than reliving the past. Frankl's professional plans were interrupted by the events of the Holocaust, with his arrest and imprisonment in four different concentration camps over a two-and-a-half-year period. Faced with the unimaginable, he applied his theory of logotherapy and helped many of his fellow camp victims to survive. When the war ended and Frankl returned to Vienna, he learned of the deaths of his beloved wife and parents in the camps. Years of his own depression were countered with encouragement from colleagues and a new relationship and marriage. He began to write about his experiences from a psychological viewpoint. The result was his widely read and acclaimed book Man's Search for Meaning. Redsand has written an intriguing biography of a man who made a huge impact on the lives of many. His story presents a valued and readable look at one man's life.–Rita Soltan, Youth Services Consultant, West Bloomfield, MI Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist
A survivor of Theresienstadt and Auschwitz, Viktor Frankl became a world-renowned psychiatrist, and his book Man's Search for Meaning (1946) has sold millions. This biography, illustrated by a plentiful selection of black-and-white photos, sets his personal story against the history of his time, including discussion of the rise of Hitler and the destruction of the Jews, as well as Frankl's own incredibly painful experience--the loss of his family and his years in the death camps. Less accessible than the history is Redsand's turgid explanation of Frankl's psychological analysis. Although this book lacks the stark immediacy of some Holocaust memoirs--for example, Primo Levi's The Drowned and the Saved (1988)--there's still a lot to discuss here--especially Frankl's ideas of salvation through love and personal responsibility, and his opposition to revenge and collective guilt. Includes an annotated bibliography and chapter notes, mainly to Frankl's own writing. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Having read Victor Frankl's classic book, "Man's Search for Meaning several times, I decided to purchase "Victor Frankl: A Life Worth Living," to learn more about the man. Although written for high school students, the book is also an excellent resource for people of all ages.Anna Redsand has done exhaustive research on Frankl's life, encompassing all of the periods of his life. While "Man's Search for Meaning," provides the reader with the horrendous details of Frankl's time in several concentration camps, this book provides missing details about the man himself. It's very well written, includes many large photographs, and does an outstanding job of chronicling the life of this very important man. It offers a great deal of insight on Frankl, that until reading the book, I was unaware of.Frankl is the founder of logotherapy and was a practicing psychiatrist and neurologist. In "Man's Search for Meaning," he details how he survived the Nazi concentration camps by putting his theories of logotherapy into practice. His basic premise states that if a person has a "why" for living, than he will somehow come up with a "how." He found "meaning" to be the most important thing that enabled him to survive the atrocities of the Nazi's. He looked beyond the unthinkable realities of the concentration camps, and tried to focus on thoughts that would provide him with a purpose for staying alive. In this regard, he helped many fellow inmates by providing them with extra scraps of food, and by educating them on his theory of logotherapy. While outside forces couldn't be changed, he believed that a prisoner would have a much greater chance of survival if he relied on his inner strength.Throughout this book, we learn more about logotherapy, as well as the differences between this type of thinking and the theories of Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler. There was much controversy concerning Frankl's belief system and those of his peers. What I especially liked about this book, was the fact that it presented Frankl as a very real person. I had always thought of him as a very serious individual, however after reading "A Life Worth Living," I now see that he was a man with a very wide range of personalities. His passion was rock climbing, which he did throughout Europe and in Yosemite National Park in the United States. When he remarried after the war, he brought his new wife along with him on his rock climbs. Frankl was a man who lost his entire family in the Nazi concentration camps, yet we see through this book that he was able to go on, and miraculously to flourish. While having a very serious side, which you'll read about in Man's Search for Meaning," he also had a very light side and was fond of playing practical jokes. I laughed when I read that he had a passion for collecting autographs, one of which was from "Captain Kangaroo." Who would have ever thought that Frankl would take an interest in something as mundane as this.Anna Redsand's book is a very simple read, yet an invaluable source for learning about Frankl's life, from beginning to end. The photographs are an invaluable resource in and of themselves, and the book is written in a fashion that will make it easy for young adults to learn more about this incredible mans life. I believe that it would serve a great purpose for all high school students to read this book, followed by a reading of Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning". You would certainly not want to read one and not the other. While this book provides a great deal of insight into all aspects of Frankl's character from birth to death, "Man's Search for Meaning," provides us with lessons on how to live and survive. Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning," is one of the most important books ever written. "A Life Worth Living," provides new details on Frankl's life, not mentioned in his book. The two books combined, capture the essence of Frankl's life and provide us with a plethora of information as to what our purpose on earth really is.
This book can stand alone as an inspiring biography, without the reader having read Frankl's famous book, Man's Search for Meaning; but it certainly ought to make any interested reader run to find a copy of Man's Search for Meaning. This biography is written by a high school teacher, and is high school level reading. I've given it five stars, firstly because making Frankl's story available to young people, in a manner that honors the subject, is an invaluable service. Frankl's life after his release from Auschwitz concentration camp was a very great triumph. He subsequently turned his experience into a life philosophy that is of profound relevance to every human being, young or old. I can't think of a more important book for the high school library, especially because it tracks the lives of both Frankl and Hitler. It's shocking that students coming through high school today know hardly anything about Nazi Germany and World War II, so Redsand's endeavor to bring attention to this subject, and particularly to the subject of the concentration camps, is indispensable. In addition, this book has several aspects of interest to adults: 1) Anna Redsand has grasped the essentials of the man's life and his principles, and tread the grapes into the wine of crucial life lessons; 2) the book is chockful of photographs, both of Frankl's life and his times, and they are large and well printed; 3) Redsand briefly reviews other books on Frankl, and also has a Further Reading section, which were both of interest to me; 4) the book is just plain well-written, simple and easy to read; and 5) I have also read Man's Search for Meaning, as well as Frankl's autobiography entitled Recollections, and find that Redsand summarized the information very well. At 146 pages, it's got substance, but a good adult reader will finish it quite quickly, although I find myself returning to the photographs.
Frankl survived Auchvitz and is at the top as a spokespeson for those who survived theHolocaust. asone who was 7 when WW II ended, what can Isay to this genius who managed to be a doctor rather than a victim the whole time he served. For anyone, Jewish or otherwise, this bookbelongs next to Plato on your shelves.
I had the good fortune of studying with Viktor Frankl and that experience changed my life. It was wonderful to read Anna's book and I recalled so many stories that Viktor had shared with me. His spirit and wisdom live in so many of us who knew him. Thank you Anna for this splendid work.S.J.Tagliareni author of Hitler's Priest
Victor Frankl knows more about suffering than most of us will ever know. This as well as his other book, Man's Search for Meaning are excellent books, and easily read in a weekend. The book arrive in a timely manner and in good shape.
