About the Author

Peter Hathaway Capstick (1940-1996), a former Wall Street stockbroker turned professional adventurer, was critically acclaimed as the successor to Hemingway and Ruark in African hunting literature. After giving up his career, the New Jersey native hunted in Central and South America before going to Africa in 1968, where he held professional hunting licenses in Ethiopia, Zambia, Botswana, and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Capstick also served in that most perilous of trades―Elephant and Buffalo Cropping Officer. In addition to writing about hunting, he was also featured in an award-winning safari video and audio tapes.Captstick settled in Pretoria, South Africa with his wife Fiona until his death at age 56.

I don't really remember when I began being interested in big game hunters and the "big five". But I find Peter Hathaway Capstick fascinating. He comes across as a rather bad boy of the English gentry. His wit, metaphors, descriptions all resonate--British. But he is an American who attended the University of Virginia! He seems to love big, powerful guns/rifles/shotguns, but a close second favorite of his is a round (or three) of "sundowners", hefty glasses of scotch/whiskey/good, really good wine. But he'll settle for a cold beer as long as he has his smokes. I used to watch nature shows and cringe when the lion caught the little antelope. Now I observe predatory animals doing what nature intended for them to do. After all, fried chicken anyone?I have now read all of Capstick's books and enjoyed every one. I particularly respect the way he describes the African people and their different cultures. His trusty gunbearer, Silent, and scout, Invisible, are held in manly affection. Perhaps Capstick's books appeal to me because they represent a type of man and lifestyle which has sustained the human race since the birth of man and seems too often now to becoming men with tidy fingernails, soft hands, and fluorescent tans encased in suits and ties. Well yes, someone has to be a lawyer, but give me the rough-around-the-edges guy any time. Capstick's books allow this armchair traveler to experience the thrill of the safari without the $75,000 fee.

Capstick's books make other hunting themed books seem boring by comparison. The book is full of well written anecdotes on hunting Africa's most dangerous beasts. Anyone who has read Capstick will know that the author has a natural gift for words and storytelling. Really, he could probably have written about any topic he wanted to and it would have been interesting. His books, this one included, are gifts to those who are fans of the genre or hunting in general. Each anecdote wastes no space and the chapters are well organized. Chapstick references legendary professional hunters, as well as including countless stories from his own experiences.The book details the variety of ways that both man and beast can meet their end in the tall grass. Capstick's commentary never gets old, and after reading his books, you will find yourself having absorbed more information than you could have imagined. The genre of hunting is often written about, but very seldom well written about. Add this book to your library before all other hunting books.

This book is yet another of Capstick's insights into the life of a Bwanna (African Hunting Guide). For those who want to go hunt big game in Africa, this book will either fire up the desire to go or scare you so badly, you'll never want to leave home again. With the help of his Black African (Masai) Assistants,(Silent and Deadly --Yup! That's their names) Capstick faces the big five of African Man-Killers, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Lion, Hippo, and Elephants. I never knew that Elephants would do their best to kill people. Yikes! While no mere mortal can compare to Robert Ruark as a big game hunter and writer / author, Capsticks holds firmly in second place. The book is scary because it is true. Bill Cosby once said, "I'm not the boss at my house. I don't know when I lost it. I don't know if I ever had it, but I've seen the boss's job and I don't want it." The same can be said of being a Bwanna like Capstick. Great to read about, but I sure don't want to do it! DEATH IN THE LONG GRASS is compelling reading. God bless! Riveting and real.Capstick is Masterful at putting you next to him as he ghosts after a wounded leopard in the thick stuff as the sun is setting. You're dead meat, but you have to go.There's no Free Latte's coupons in the back of the book. None. My grandsons are already addicted. If you don't love this book and the DANGER it connects you with, question your manhood... for real.

Yes, Peter Hathaway Capstick is his real name, and what a great name for a White Hunter !!! Mr. Capstick was a professional hunter, both for the government and privately (i.e., he lead safaris) in Africa in the 1970s. I remember reading his articles in Outdoor Life back then, thrilling as I read about how he put his life on the line to track a wounded man-eating lion that had just devoured some poor native. When I stumbled across this book recently, I immediately ordered it, and I was not disappointed. Despite slinging words the way William Shatner chews scenery (almost to the point of being comical at times), his stories of real-life death in the long grass are fascinating and engaging. When he tells us about how he was knocked down and straddled by a leopard that had just slaughtered a family of six (he says the leopard is the only animal in Africa that kills people for fun), I thought "oh boy how is he gonna get out of this ?". Thank goodness for his head tracker Silent, who poked the barrel of his ancient shotgun into the kitty's ear and pulled both triggers. Yes, it's *that* kind of book.Capstick starts with a chapter on each of the African Big 5, and then adds chapters on the many other animals there that can and will kill you if they get a chance. Like the hippo, who he says kills more natives each year than the Big 5 combined. Or the hyena, a pack of which can and will force a lion off its kill.

A truly pleasurable, engrossing read. Each story is so exquisitely vivid and laced with superlative metaphors - in that 1970s literary style - that I am completely mentally transported to the African bush in every chapter. Capstick has forever transformed my imagination of the African continent, having yet to experience it in person myself. I have a newfound appreciation for the danger inherent in any African hunt, from encounters with the "Big Five" to the "underrated killers". It no doubt has enticed many adventurous souls to make their way to Africa; I'm day-dreaming of my first trip as I write this.

This book makes embryology enjoyable. Great images from Netter, as usual, and simple explanations. Can go into as much detail as needed. Clinically relavent material also provided.

Many more pictures than commonly available in other Embryo books, which is really why anyone buys a Netter's....

This is a new and welcome addition to the Netter family of publications. IMHO, the real utility of Netter publications lies in the rendition of the plates. As an embryological atlas, this volume leaves somethings to be desired. Aside from this caveat, the images are a wonderful addition to the littany of "standard" figures that are ususally the same figure repeated with minor variations.The use of color is of particular value in understanding the development of structures where boundaries between transient elements is indistinct. These make a nice adjunct to the more conventional texts.This is a teaching book that will be of greatest use to those who have already grasped the basic elements of human embryology. They illustrate conceptually complex topics and are thus of real utility. I don't see this as a primary text, since it contains a great deal of anatomical, pathological and teratological images as well.

While not as narrative as Weiss's other regression books, this book explores the different ways regression therapy has helped heal people with all sorts of different problems. Instead of following a particular person or set of people through their healing journey, this book relates shorter anecdotes about many people and their myriad results, all of which support Weiss's legitimate conclusion that past life regression therapy is a powerful healing tool. I enjoyed this book quite a lot, though I would recommend "Many Lives, Many Masters" or "Only Love Is Real" if you haven't read a Weiss book before.

In this book, Dr. Weiss provides dozens of case-studies to explain how past-life regression can give us insight and understand as to the reason for the many various "issues", behaviors, conflicts, fears, phobias, anxieties we all face in everyday life.The patient sessions the author describes are extremely eye-opening. They may help explain certain things about you or your life that you might have always sensed but could not quite comprehend.In addition to the amazing cases he describes, Dr. Weiss also provides a number of exercises and tips for self-therapy, meditation, and relaxation. Also, in the appendix is included a script for self-hypnosis for those seeking to look into past lives in the comfort of their own home.I highly recommend this book to anyone. Even if you haven't read "Many Lives, Many Masters", there is much to gain from this book. And if you have read his first book then you will enjoy the many more examples of past-life regressions within.

This is a great book. I had no idea of regression therapy, however, this book really opened my eyes to something both stimulating and thought provoking. I have read all of Dr. Weiss's books which have opened my mind to much more than thought possible.

This is the fourth of Dr. Weiss' books that I've read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It clarifies and answers some of the mysteries of why we are here, why things happen in life and offers help in resolving difficult patterns. I am hungry to read and learn more.

Brian Weiss blends the less effective psychological treatments of psychotherapy, with that of the most effective, and treatable results of past life regression hypnotherapy. He brings about a method that works many times over with numerous clients to alleviate emotional trauma caused by past life experiences. The allowance, to bring traumatic past life experiences into the forefront of current human consciousness, can alleviate, and totally dismiss any current emotional blockages, that are experienced in your current life. This book, along with so many others that he has written, is highly recommended reading!
